Southampton City Art Gallery
Southampton City Art Gallery is internationally renowned for its permanent collection. Spanning eight centuries, it tells the story of western art from the Renaissance period to the present day. The core of the collection is twentieth century, contemporary British art. Strong clusters within this element include Post-Impressionism (such as the Camden Town Group), Surrealism, St Ives and progressive contemporary art from the mid-1970s.
Opened in April 1939 within Southampton’s Civic Centre, it offers high quality exhibitions ranging from painting, sculpture and drawing, to photography and film. Regularly changing displays are also a feature of Southampton City Art Gallery, making each visit unique. The venue caters for families, with gallery trails through the exhibitions, monthly art clubs and a fantastic range of activities for all ages.
