Eric Ravilious
Lecture by Christine Clearkin. Designer and Watercolourist, Eric Ravilious (d. 1942) was very much an artist of the twentieth century. He was much admired in his day, and has continued to influence subsequent generations of artists, especially those specialising in design Continent and expressed it in a uniquely English way through his murals (now all lost), his design work for publishing houses, Wedgwood, Stuart Crystal and others, and his beautiful, luminous watercolours. He became an Official War Artist to the Admiralty in 1940 and was briefly seconded to the Air Force in 1942 before dying in an air crash in the North Atlantic.
